One of the most common questions I hear these days is whether it’s safe for a pregnant woman to receive one of the COVID vaccines.

Yes, it is safe, and we recommend you be vaccinated against this potentially serious illness.

After reviewing extensive research, both the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and The American College of  Obstetricians & Gynecologists (ACOG) recently updated their recommendations for pregnant (and recently pregnant) women and encourage that they be vaccinated.

There is a great deal of misinformation out there about the COVID vaccine. Ironically, many of the myths I hear should correctly be attributed to the COVID disease, not the vaccine.

Here are some facts:

• If you’re pregnant, you are at greater risk of severe illness from COVID-19
• If you have COVID-19 during pregnancy, your risk for preterm birth increases.
• The vaccine does not increase the risk of miscarriage.
• There is no data to indicate that the vaccine effects your fertility

Bottom line: the COVID vaccine is safe and effective at preventing serious illness and death from COVID. Data indicates that the COVID vaccines provide protection for pregnant and lactating women, as well as newborns.

The CDC, The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and other leading organizations encourage women ages 12 and up to be immunized against COVID. Vaccination is our way out of this pandemic, and it’s an important step to keep you and your baby safe and healthy.
